Service and Learning Trip 2019 Info Session

What is a Service Learning Trip?

A Service Learning Trip is an intergenerational chance for us to learn while serving together. We try to balance both local opportunities and more distant opportunities so that we can understand the local need within the wider context. By getting outside our day-to-day bubbles we expand our world view, our relationships, our self understanding, and our faith.

When & Where & Who is it?

JUNE 22-29 we are signed up to go to the Simply Smiles Children's Home in Oaxaca, Mexico (pronounced wa-HA-ka).
This is intended for youth and adults. Youth over 15 years old can join the group on their own. Youth 10-14 years old must have a parent sign up with them.

We recognize the end of June is a risky choice because of potential bad weather school calendar changes. We have worked out a number of potential Plans B, C, D just in case.

Also, the group is limited to 15 volunteers. In the event that we have a ton more sign ups than available slots, we have also worked out a number of potential Plans B, C, D, including adding a different week or a trip to Simply Smiles other sight on a Lakota Reservation.

Non-church members are welcome to sign up, but priority goes to members of the churches partnered through the OASIS Multi-Church Youth Ministry. If you are not formally a member of any of these churches, you will be expected to participate on a regular basis in the OASIS Multi-Church Youth Ministry.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost per person is $1,500 (depending on cost of flights). In Spring Glen Church's recent history we have made it our goal to fundraise enough so that each person only has to cover the costs of flights, which should be around $500-$750. Scholarships are available as needed.

All Members are expected to attend all pre-trip meetings and fundraising opportunities. If you are unable to attend or participate, we ask you to send a representative.

Are There Other Items, Equipment, Documents That I Will Need?

Once you sign up we will distribute packing lists, permission slips, health forms, and other pertinent logistical information. You will need a passport. If your current passport expires within 6 months after the trip date, you will need to renew your passport.

How Do I Sign Up?

Email Jack@SpringGlenChurch.org to let him know you are interested. In order to officially claim your spot on the trip, deposits will be due by mid-January.

Is it Safe? Do I need to know Spanish? What kind of work will we be doing?

A lot of your FAQs will be answered in this 8-minute video of Simply Smiles founder Bryan Nurnberger giving an overview of a trip to Oaxaca.
