Pastor Jack's Backpack (of Friends)

A Semi-Regular Podcast Series, Episode 4

In this sort-of-monthly adult ed podcast series, Pastor Jack unpacks big concepts by interviewing great authors of books he's been carrying around in his metaphorical backpack. Our fourth episode features Spring Glen neighborhood resident Dr Venezia Michalsen. Dr Michalsen's work focuses on the experience of women, especially mothers, who have come into contact with the criminal justice system. In this conversation, Pastor Jack & Dr Michalsen discuss her book Mothering & Desistance in Re-Entry a very accessible scholarly text based on research, broad data, and one-on-one interviews to better understand how motherhood adds complicated layers both systemically and individually to the struggles of incarceration. It is a powerful angle on Christ's call to us as Christians to be in relationship with those who are imprisoned.
