Christian Action Committee

Overview

Working in collaboration with a variety of religious and secular organizations, the Christian Action Committee promotes peace, well-being and faith in the communities we serve with the goal of transforming the lives of congregation members and those in need.

• Christian Community Action:  Through CCA’s Adopt an Apartment program, SGC provides material goods and funds for families in emergency and in need of transitional housing in New Haven.
• Covenant to Care for Children and The Town of Hamden: SGC coordinates with both organizations tor help serve Hamden residents in need by providing them with: backpacks and school supplies, Thanksgiving food baskets, holidays gifts for children and spring baskets for kids to support literacy and/or physical fitness and wellness.
• Habitat for Humanity: A premier sponsor of Sleeping Giant Build, SGC helps to fund and provide volunteer labor to build one home at a time in the Greater New Haven area.
• Columbus House Meals: SGC provides and serves evening meals every 4th Thursday at this New Haven shelter for people who are homeless.
• Martha's Place: SGC serves a meal at the woman's shelter every Wednesday followed by a program to help the women focus on relaxation, self-care techniques and gratitude journaling.
• Interfaith Blood Drives: Twice yearly (February and June) blood drives jointly sponsored by SGC and Temple Beth Sholom (1809 Whitney Avenue) at alternating sites.
• Ella B. Scantlebury Senior Residence: Works jointly with Christian Tabernacle Church to support this residence of a lively set of senior African American ladies through monthly visits on the 3rd Saturday of the month.
• Farmer’s Market: SGC leadership provides a weekly outdoor market June-October. Held in the church parking lot, the market provides the neighborhood with locally grown fresh farm products directly from local farmers along with other products from local vendors and food trucks.
• Abraham’s Tent: For a week each winter, SGC serves as an overflow shelter for 12 men from Columbus House.  SGC provides dinner and breakfast, evening fellowship and overnight staffing.
