Reaching Out to the Wider Community

We Are an Open House

Part of the Spring Glen Church's mission to serve the community includes welcoming various groups to meet here. The schedule is:

Alcoholics Anonymous meets in the Great Hall on the 2nd floor of the Parish House.
Saturday – 4 to 5 p.m.
Sunday – 5 to 6 p.m.
Monday – 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Al-Anon meets in the basement in a small chapel.
Monday - 8 p.m. (For people hurt by someone else's drinking.)

Narcotics Anonymous meets in the basement.
Wednesday - 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

In addition to the 12-step groups, we welcome the Spring Glen Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Singles Bridge Club, Contract Bridge Club, and Silk ’n’ Sounds (a women's a cappella chorus) that raises money for research on autism. For the last 75 years, Scouts have met here, and today we continue to sponsor Boy Scout Pack 608 and several of its Cub Scout Dens.

The Spring Glen Church is fully accessible.

There is a ramp from the parking lot to the main door and an elevator in the entry to reach all floors of the building. Visitors may also use the church's wheelchairs.  Our sanctuary has a system to provide hearing assistance, and we provide large-type Orders of Worship and music for those needing visual assistance (please see the church office or ushers).  We have family-friendly gender-neutral bathrooms on all floors that are also fully accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.

Benevolence Committee

The Benevolence Committee oversees budget of $50,000+ in benevolence pledges. It also coordinates "Blanket Sunday," "Tools of Hope," the Christmas Offering for designated agencies, and an Easter Offering for the UCC's "One Great Hour of Sharing."

Christian Action Committee

Supports the following projects:

  • Christian Community Action: material goods and funds for families in emergency and transitional housing in New Haven.
  • Covenant to Care: material goods (cribs, car seats, household items) and grocery/clothing gift certificates to clients served by the State Department of Children and Families. Those in need also receive Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas gifts, Easter baskets and backpacks and supplies for school.

The Spring Glen Church Needle Arts

Church members and friends gather once a month (September to May) at different homes to enjoy each other's company and make items for their own use and to donate to others.  In the past, prayer shawls, hats, scarves, etc. have been sold at the church's annual Christmas Craft Sale, and the money raised has been forwarded to Heifer Project International to buy sheep for a family in a developing country. Hats, scarves, etc. have also been donated to the church's Mitten Tree.  For more information please contact Connie Rogers. Join us! All skills levels welcome and we can also teach you what you need to know. (We enjoy knitting, crocheting, crossstitching, quilting, etc.) This group originated as a Lenten 2004 small group offering called "Knitting It All Together" led by Vickie Jackson and Nancy Beals.

Habitat for Humanity

SGC sends volunteer crews to help build houses.

Columbus House Meals

SGC provides and serves evening meals every 4th Thursday at this New Haven shelter for people who are homeless.

Food Collection Every Communion Sunday

Food is received every week (but especially on Communion Sundays, the first Sunday of the month) for the Hamden Food Bank.  There is also a container for cash offerings on the food box in the narthex.

Interfaith Blood Drives

Twice yearly (February and June) blood drives jointly sponsored by SCG and Temple Beth Sholom (1809 Whitney Avenue) at alternating sites.

Open Door - Founded  in 1970

Out of our Christian concern for our neighbors, the “Open Door” welcomes older members of all denominations in Hamden and the surrounding communities to get together in fellowship at the Spring Glen Church. The group meets on the 1st Wednesday from October to May for luncheon and a program.  The meal includes casseroles from a caterer; and salads and desserts provided by members. Lunch costs $5.00.

Come along and bring a neighbor!
We love to make new friends!
